Director, Writer, and Producer Martin Oetting worked in marketing and advertising for almost 20 years. In early 2016, he left the world of advertising. Shocked by Donald Trump's first election, he turned his attention to media projects that tackle the central political issues of our time.

"The starting point of ‘Purpose’ was Donald Trump’s first election in 2016. It more than troubled me. I knew that life was never going to be the same. After the election, I changed all my plans. Rather than developing a new business job for myself, I tried to figure out what the hell was going on. Within a few months, my journey of discovery and understanding led me to Katherine Trebeck. Within a year, I knew that I had to make a documentary feature film about her and Lorenzo Fioramonti’s political work."

Katherine Trebeck is a political economist. The film sheds a light on her pivotal role in helping launch the 'Wellbeing Economy Governments' initiative in 2018/2019. She also worked with Oxfam in Scotland for eight years and co-founded the 'Wellbeing Economy Alliance' in 2018 — an NGO designed to advance economic systems change. In 2023, she returned to her native Australia where she continues to work with universities, NGOs, and policymakers to create economies that are fit for the 21st century.

Lorenzo Fioramonti

Lorenzo Fioramonti is a Professor for Political Economy. The film follows him as he steps away from academia to enter the realm of politics, run for office and eventually join the Italian government as a minister, determined to drive change from within. After his time in politics, he has co-founded the Institute for Sustainability in Surrey. Today, he is engaged in helping organisations, companies and political institutions find a path of true sustainability and purpose.

Beyond GDP

The GDP-growth-based economic logic requires us to make more money every year — an iron-clad rule to dominate all else. However, we know from research that an economy that largely focuses on monetary growth will increase the divide between rich and poor further and further, until the richest become so powerful that they begin to dominate all aspects of life. We can observe what that leads to if we take a look at US politics in late 2024.
