Mohana

Mohanasundari is the President of the Veera Pengal Munnetra Sangam (VPMS). A former beautician and small business owner, she became an auto driver during the pandemic. Mohana has been relentlessly organising and fighting against patriarchal prejudice towards women drivers in the transport sector in Chennai for over six years. She has also gained recognition for her work by winning the Kamala Bhasin Award for Gender Equality in 2025 and the Devi Award 2026 by The Indian Express for innovation in her field.

1. May 2024 - organised a media and financial literacy camp with 60 women drivers from VPMS. With the support of a range of facilitators including a filmmaker, theatre artist, journalist, social media influencer and an activist, the women learnt to tell their own stories through reel-making.

2. 2024 - Funding raised from Omidyar Network India to support the making of the short documentary. The film premiered at IDFA in November 2025.

3. 2024 - Focus-group sessions for members who were eager to further learn and practice using media tools as a way to advocate for the union's aspirations and goals.

4. 2025 - Led by the community organising efforts of ECTE/ACE Foundation, VPMS transitions from a union into a formally registered co-operative becoming Tamil Nadu’s first co-op in the transportation sector that is worker-owned, managed, and led entirely by women. 

5. June 2025 - Auto Queens participated in The Good Media Lab & Pitch, Berlin and won a grant to support the film's impact objectives.

6. Since Dec 2025 - The film and VPMS featured in over 10 news publications and magazines including The Polis Project and India Development Review (IDR), Asia’s largest knowledge platform for ideas and insights on philanthropy and social impact.

7. April 2026 - Longlisted for the One World Media Awards which recognises the best creative and media coverage from and about the Global South.

8. Until May 2026 - conducted 12 screenings and with your contribution we will gain momentum to achieve 500+ screenings in Tamil Nadu, India and around the world to advocate for the goals of VPMS.
