MMCC (Mini Mobile Circus for Children) is an international organization that has reached more than 3.6 million children and audience members, primarily in Afghanistan. Using circus as a pedagogical and social tool, MMCC helps children build resilience, confidence, and a sense of community through its "cheerful pedagogy"—a playful, sensory-based approach that encourages learning through trust, collaboration, and creativity.
The two protagonists live with their families in Afghanistan. Due to the political situation, gendered restrictions and very few economical ressources, their access to education and playful spaces are highly challenged.
In August 2021, as I watched the Taliban take control of Kabul from my home in Denmark, it was clear that a dark and uncertain future lay ahead for many Afghans, especially women and children. One year later, I traveled to Afghanistan and met Zahra and Zalgai. Both were 12 years old, devoted to school, friendship, and the circus they belonged to. The film is a testament to their resilience, and to the enduring power of hope in the face of silence and erasure.
At its heart, If Luck Will Come is a coming-of-age story about two children whose lives are transformed in profoundly different ways. The production was developed in close collaboration with Afghan filmmakers, advisors, and local crew, whose expertise shaped the project's cultural, ethical, and security framework. All support from the fundraiser will likewise be handled with great care and in ways that prioritize the safety, dignity and privacy of the participants.
