Emma Slade is the first and only Western woman to be ordained as a Buddhist nun in the Kingdom of Bhutan.

She had an exciting international career in finance. But a deep seated desire to enquire into the deeper aspects of what it is to be a human being was brought to the surface following a life-changing visit to Indonesia. Her life changed exponentially after she was held at gunpoint in her hotel room in Jakarta. She resigned from her financial career and began travelling and exploring yoga and meditation. From financial analyst to Buddhist nun. She is now an established author, inspirational teacher, and founder of Opening Your Heart to Bhutan, a charity for special needs children's school projects.

She now faces her most formidable challenge yet to raise money for her charity: conquering the Wild Bhutan Trail, an unforgiving 403km route crossing 12 mountains over 37 days. It's wild and untouched; very few have made the entire journey, and it is intentionally left literally to the wild to reduce any impact on nature. It’s arduous, surprising and virtually unseen.

This documentary will follow Emma on this extraordinary journey, showcasing resilience in the face of nature’s toughest trials. Viewers will witness a woman’s deep connection to Bhutan, living in the East, and a constant torsion between the East and West.

  • Your impact is guaranteed: The foundation has proven itself with several successful school projects in Bhutan since 2015.
  • You support a highly respected person: in 2017 Emma was given the Point of Light award by the UK Prime Minister in recognition of her exceptional volunteering.
  • You donate to a trustworthy cause: this is a registered charity whose work is providing education, medicine & shelter to children facing the greatest challenges in Bhutan.
  • Only 8% of donations are used to run the charity, this means 92% is used on the charity projects
  • You support two enterprising women who are making this film from the heart, a Bhutanese and a Dutch director.
  • You are part of a movement that resists consumerism and prioritizes harmony. Bhutan rituals, animal welfare, and healing traditions offer unique insights into a mindful way of life.
  • You are part of driving social change because this film makes clear calls to action, encouraging viewers to support or donate to this good cause.
  • You are committed to amplifying marginalised voices: you help the marginalised community in Bhutan, elevating voices that might not otherwise be heard.
