Mahmud joined AFP in 2003 and is the Gaza office's most famous member, awarded with numerous international prizes. In 2024, he won the Visa d'Or and the Bayeux First Prize for war correspondents. He has covered many events outside Gaza, from the Arab revolutions to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Evacuated from Gaza in February 2024 with his wife and their four children, he now covers the news for afp from the Doha office in Qatar.
27 August 2026 - Inside Gaza wins the Best Feature Documentary Award at Kotka Human Rights Film Festival in Finland - Mohammed Abed and Finland Correspondent Anna Korkman represented the film crew.
1. July 2026 - Inside Gaza wins Best International feature documentary award and Best International Editing Award at Oscar Qualifying Doc Edge Film Festival in New Zealand - Producer Yann Ollivier took part at a panel on "Courageous stories in a noisy world" - Inside Gaza is now eligible for Oscar consideration and we believe that the Academy Awards can be a good place to talk about the human cost of bearing witness and the need for field journalism at a time when truth is under attack.

29 April 2026 - Roman Brodman Prize 2026 goes to Inside Gaza !
24 Avril 2026 - At Assises internationales du Journalisme de Tours Inside Gaza wins the Prix Enquête et Investigation.
3 April 2026 - Inside Gaza wins the Grand Prix and Audience Award at FIGRA 2026 documentary film festival.
7 December 2025 - Screening with protagonist Mohamed Abed in Berlin with Reporters without borders.
