Mapulu Kamayurá is the first female shaman of her people in Xingu, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. A healer, matriarch, and activist, she founded the village of Hiulaya to preserve ancestral knowledge and empower Indigenous women’s leadership.

the feature film Mapulu tells the story of Mapulu Kamayurá, the first woman shaman of her people in the Upper Xingu, in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. Blending documentary and dramatization, the film follows her journey as a healer, matriarch, and activist, interweaving her childhood initiation with her present struggle to preserve ancestral knowledge and strengthen Indigenous women’s leadership. 

– Mapulu’s home and community spaces need repairs and strengthening to withstand storms and provide safety.

These urgent needs directly affect the survival, health, and dignity of Mapulu, her family, and her community. The film’s impact campaign is designed to help secure these improvements, aligning the documentary with tangible action for Hiulaya’s future.
