Nannan is a woman with a severe disability. She was abandoned by her biological parents at birth due to her condition, and experienced a second abandonment before finally being adopted by her current parents. Today, she lives with her adoptive father, who is in his 70s and works as a farmer with very limited income. Although Nannan's life is full of challenges, she has a very bright and radiant inner world. You can see it in her paintings.
Yao Ximei has long been rooted in impoverished rural areas, serving individuals with physical and mental disabilities such as autism, Down syndrome, and schizophrenia, as well as those with moderate to severe impairments. Many of them require constant care, yet their families often lack the capacity to provide it. Yao Ximei aims to create a warm and supportive refuge for those who are frequently overlooked and in need of sustained assistance.
I am a filmmaker passionate about telling the stories of those often overlooked. Growing up with ADHD, I’ve experienced the challenges of feeling different, which has driven me to shed light on the lives of people with disabilities in rural China. Through my documentary, I aim to share the resilience, struggles, and dreams of individuals like Nannan and the incredible work of Yao and the Enyou Disability Service Center.
The documentary has been officially selected for the Sheffield DocFest, one of the world's leading documentary festivals.
