GAZI is the protagonist of KICKOFF. In the remote mountain Kyrgyz village of Kök-Tash, where women are expected to stay home, she dares to dream differently. What begins as a simple act — organizing a women’s football game for her mother’s birthday — grows into a bold movement that challenges deep-rooted traditions. Through football, Gazi and the women of Kök-Tash find a voice that defies expectations and sparks social change. As they train and compete, they discover strength, solidarity, and the power of community.
In Kök-Tash, women have long been confined to traditional roles, expected to stay at home and dedicate themselves to family. Opportunities for education, sport, or public life are limited, and conservative social norms persist. Through the first women’s football tournament, they are breaking taboos, and gaining confidence on and off the pitch. What begins as a simple game has become a movement that challenges societal expectations, and shows that these women are champions in every sense, in life and sport.
