Our Existence is a Miracle

Nannan

Nannan is a woman with a severe disability. She was abandoned by her biological parents at birth due to her condition, and experienced a second abandonment before finally being adopted by her current parents. Today, she lives with her adoptive father, who is in his 70s and works as a farmer with very limited income. Although Nannan's life is full of challenges, she has a very bright and radiant inner world. You can see it in her paintings.

With respect and curiosity, this film follows two central characters: Nannan, a woman with cerebral palsy, and Yao, the founder of a rural disability care facility. After facing discrimination and losing her adoptive mother to suicide, Nannan finds new purpose at the facility. Through rehabilitation activities and helping others, she builds meaningful relationships. Yao's dedication shows through her interactions with residents, culminating in a memorable trip to the sea. Our Existence is a Miracle authentically portrays the challenges and joys of disabled individuals in rural China – emphasising a sense of community and resilience. As Yao, the founder of the facility, notes: ‘where there’s a will there’s a way’.
