Synopsis : As the war in Eastern Ukraine takes a heavy toll on families living near the frontline, a small group of strong-willed social workers work tirelessly in a special kind of orphanage to create an almost magical safe space for kids to live in.
Update: With the Russian full scale invasion in February 2023, the orphanage had to be abandoned, since it was in the occupied area. The children and social workers at the orphanage were all transported to other, safer, parts of Ukraine.
At the time of the invasion the children in the film had all left the orphanage.
Here is a summary of their current situation:
Eva
Eva's grandmother died of covid, and we were worried for a while that she would return to the orphanage, but luckily her uncle took over custody. When the war broke out, we lost contact with her, but she appeared in western Ukraine together with her uncle and brother, and we have now re-established contact with her. She's doing really well.
Sasha
Sasha's adoption unfortunately fell through. So she went to the same orphanage as Kolya. She was also sent to a temporary orphanage in Europe when the war broke out, and she is still there. She seems to be OK. She has started gymnastics and regularly talks to a psychologist.
Alina
We lost contact with her when the war broke out, but she is still in the same family that she was adopted by in the film.
Kolya
He was sent to an orphanage, as we saw in the movie. His siblings were adopted by the same family, but there was no room for him. He was allowed to keep in touch. When the war broke out, he was moved away and lost contact with his siblings. He still hasn't made contact with his siblings.
At the beginning of 2023, Kolya was adopted by a resourceful family, and today lives in western Ukraine. Actually his adoptive father saw A HOUSE MADE OF SPLINTERS and decided to find him and try to adopt him. Kolya's adoptive father has promised to try everything possible to restore contact with Kolya's siblings. Kolya is doing really well.
This is Simon Lereng Wilmont's second film shot in Eastern Ukraine, his feature debut was the award winning "The Distant Barking of Dogs" which premiered in 2017, about Oleg and his grandmother, who lived in a tiny village close to the frontline in Eastern Ukraine. Through the film we followed their daily life - under the constant shadow of war. Oleg and his grandmother had to flee their village during the first months of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, ending up in a basement in Mariupol for more than a month. They were able to leave and go to a more peaceful part of Ukraine, because of the donations they received through ShareDoc.
We are hoping that ShareDoc can also help better the lives of Eva, Sasha, Alina & Kolya from "A House Made of Splinters". Every little bit helps.
