SYNOPSIS
In October 2020, as Nigeria erupted in the seismic End SARS protests, a young, promising journalist, Pelumi Emmanuel Onifade, vanished. Days later, his family received the devastating news: Pelumi was dead, his life cut short amidst the chaos. Yet, in a cruel twist of bureaucratic opacity, his body has never been released by the authorities. "The Journalist Who Never Came Home" explores how the absence of a burial perpetuates an open wound for his family and friends, denying them the fundamental human right to grieve and find solace.
The film then broadens its lens to expose the precarious and often perilous landscape of Nigerian journalism, particularly in a nation where critical voices are increasingly silenced. Pelumi's death, and the subsequent stonewalling by the state, serves as a stark testament to the immense risks journalists face, a reality that forces a troubling question: how does such pervasive danger compromise the very genuineness of journalism? When reporting the truth can cost a life, and even a proper burial is denied, how can the press effectively serve its vital role as a societal watchdog?
